Research abstract

The objective of this project is to optimize the design of a microwave interference scanning system and application procedure for use in the Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) manufacturing process. Quick, efficient in-process measurement of part porosity will be an integral part of pyrolysis cycle optimization. The feasibility of this application of the novel Evisive Scan microwave interference scanning technology has been demonstrated in Phase I of this program, including: Demonstration of a scanning procedure and correlation of nominal porosity versus scanning voltage for CMC parts. Recommended insertion points in the manufacturing process and the prototype equipment in-process equipment specification will be included in the Phase I Final Report. This Phase II will complete integration of the microwave scanning equipment into the manufacturing process, and validation of the nondestructive test method variable parameters. The deliverables include: application of a prototype system in initial S200 CMC component production manufacturing process facility, and validation of the porosity measurement procedure for use in production. Application of an in-process measurement of porosity, which is performed in air, with access from one face only; and includes accurate measurement of total porosity; will facilitate significant improvement in the CMC pyrolysis process efficiency. This will reduce production time and cost for CMC parts, and enhance their application in advanced propulsion systems.
