Research abstract

Based on Phase I results that have shown the feasibility of creating exceptionally strong polymer matrix composites (PMCs) reinforced by MER’s as-produced double walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs), the Phase II program will be focused on optimizing the chemical vapor deposition synthesis of DWNTs, modifying the surface of nanotubes for chemical compatibility with a particular polymer matrix and optimizing the fabrication of PMCs aimed at further improvement of mechanical properties. The state of the tube surface will be characterized in detail and possibilities for covalent linking to the matrix explored for developing ultimate strong interface and eventually composites with highly competitive properties. The innovative techniques for manufacturing DWNT mats and their incorporation into polymer matrixes of interest will be further refined to obtain laminated PMCs with high nanotube load and mechanically isotropic properties for producing commercially viable structural nanocomposites.
