Research abstract

Conventional approaches to developing Insensitive Munitions (IM) solutions for composite rocket motor cases have involved the development of improved energetic material formulations combined with various techniques to achieve venting of the composite case structure prior to propellant ignition and catastrophic failure of the motor. Such approaches have achieved some degree of success in enhancing IM performance, but typically at the expense of additional weight, more costly manufacturing and/or reduced mechanical strength. In order to meet the challenging IM performance goals for impact, sympathetic detonation, and cook-off response, and to achieve processing characteristics that are compatible with state-of-the-art filament winding procedures, new material formulations are desired for near-term and future missile structure programs. This SBIR program involves the development and characterization of multifunctional, high conductivity polymers and highly aligned prepreg mats reinforced with multiwall nanotubes (MWNTs) to achieve tailored conductivity and inherent IM performance improvements while maintaining favorable processing characteristics. The proposed research consists of a multi-stage, integrated modeling and process development approach to achieve optimal material formulations and a prototype composite case design. This research is expected to result in enabling nanomaterials technologies to meet the Army’s goals for improved composite structures with multifunctional performance characteristics for tactical missile systems.
