Research abstract

TSC will develop a promising new generalized Space-Time Adaptive Processing (Generalized STAP) algorithm that discriminates among classes of scatterers by forming adaptive filters over the fundamental measurement dimensions of radar element, pulse time and wideband frequency. The new generalized formalism will be applied to the problem of Three-Dimensional (3D) radar imaging of the reentry vehicle (RV) or another object in the ballistic missile threat complex that strongly suppresses radar dipole clutter and jammers, using a network of ground-based radars operating at X-band. The generalized STAP algorithm is a novel synthesis of ideas from TSC’s successful 3D radar imaging programs with the principles of adaptive signal processing. TSC will demonstrate the new Generalized STAP signal processing technique for multiple radars operating in a monostatic configuration (multi-monostatic case), and also for a fully coherent geographically distributed constellation of ground based X-band radars of the kind that is conceived for the Next-Generation X-band BMDS radar. In Phase I, TSC will simulate multisensor radar data and develop prototype radar signal processing algorithms that detect and image radar targets in the presence of strong tumbling dipole clutter and jamming.
