Research abstract

RF diplexers are a common and critical element in military and commercial communications equipment, allowing two independent communications channels to share a common antenna network. A diplexer can be thought of as a special type of combiner or splitter which allows two transmit signals, two receive signals, or a transmit / receive pair to operate concurrently through a common antenna network. This capability provides the communications system designer considerable flexibility in terms of multiple simultaneous communications channels as well as the capacity for full duplex operation. Currently available commercial diplexer designs are approaching theoretical performance limits given the available substrate materials, metallization, and circuit topologies employed. Improvements in materials, processing, and design topologies are therefore required to improve upon diplexer electrical parameters such as insertion loss, VSWR, and isolation, and to improve or even remove the frequency spectrum “gap” in currently fielded systems. Removing or minimizing the “gap” would therefore allow for greater spectrum utilization as long as careful frequency management is employed. Omega Wireless Solutions recognizes the need for improved diplexer performance and therefore proposes to partner with CIS Microelectronics to leverage upon on-going research to develop an advanced integrated UHF diplexer module.
