Research abstract

There is a requirement for high power,W-Band, RF sources for the Active Denial, non-lethal weapon system. Currently the RF source is a 95 GHz gyrotron producing approximately 100 kW and requiring the use of a super conducting magnet. The weight, volume, cost, and logistics issues associated with cryogenic magnet impose considerable operational, support, and maintenance requirements and dramatically increase start-up time. Rare earth permanent magnet technology allows construction of magnets with peak fields up to 1.7 Tesla. This is sufficient for a third harmonic gyrotron producing RF power at 95 GHz. Calabazas Creek Research, Inc proposes the construction and test of such a gyrotron. The design of that gyrotron will come from the Phase I research performed by CCR which showed the feasibility of a 50 kW CW third-harmonic gyrotron with overall efficiency in excess of 40%.
