Research abstract

The objective of this Phase 2 proposal is to demonstrate the design, development, and military qualification of an advanced solid state lighting fixture that will replace certain fluorescent and incandescent lighting fixtures used by the US Navy. This new lighting system, promises a new generation of ship lighting that will reduce maintenance and the operation of redundant systems. One of the major attributes to Solid State Lighting is the ability to operate for 100,000 hours without failure. Since there is no lamp to burn out, the LED chip can continue to generate light for over 10 years without replacement. US Naval warships and submarines have been eagerly seeking to replace their current incandescent and fluorescent fixtures with Solid State Lighting. The new lighting system that was developed for delivery to the US Navy is called Light-Pod. Light-Pod, Inc. utilizes an innovative method that generates optical configurations and heat dissipation techniques that can be applied to fixtures in order to reduce size, reduce weight and provide quality Solid State Lighting fixtures at an acceptable price to the navy. In addition, Light-Pod developed a methodology to manufacture components for the fixture that meet all the stringent Navy requirements for shock, vibe, harmonics, and EMI. Light-Pod, Inc. has been awarded from the Navy a Phase I option and is submitting this report to complete the design, development and military qualification of the system.
