Research abstract

Seamless networking is a key performance enabler for the Future Force (FF) network. Commercial Border Gateway Routing Protocols such as BGP were designed for terrestrial networks, and are largely deficient in addressing the needs for dynamic selection of border nodes that is an essential component of the CONOPS for FF networks. The primary issues that need to be addressed by any Inter Domain Routing (IDR) solution for FF are Traffic Engineering, Scalability of IBGP, and QoS. We propose to design an IDR solution for FF networks that will allow flexible policies and techniques for border gateway selection that are resilient to dynamic network and traffic conditions, that will be scalable across large heterogeneous networks, be QoS-aware to implement appropriate Service Level Agreements (SLAs) between networks and take into account appropriate COMSEC considerations. In Phase I we designed solutions for Traffic Engineering and Scalability and the Candidate Architecture on which the solutions shall be implemented. In Phase II we will conduct simulation based analysis of the solutions, build prototypes for the technologies and demonstrate the performance improvements on a combination of real and emulated systems. We will also analyze the topics of QoS aware IDR and IDR with COMSEC barrier considerations.
