Research abstract

In Phase I (11/20/06 to 5/19/07), One-Cycle Control (OCC), Inc. is fabricating a 15kVA Power Electronics Controls & Conditioning (PECC) system for power dense, hybrid, load-following power systems that can deliver high-quality 120/208Vac 3-Phase output at 50Hz, 60Hz, or 400Hz. The OCC-PECC achieves high-efficiency active conversion of 3-phase AC power, over a wide voltage and frequency range, enabling integration with a variety of prime-mover/generator sources to create scalable Electric Power Generating Building Blocks (EPGBB) in the 2 to 15kW range that are load-following and power dense. Increased need for electric power on the battlefield for tactical C4ISR and for commercial C2 necessitates that fielded generators provide high-quality electric power more efficiently. The OCC-PECC is based on breakthrough OCC technology (invented at Caltech and developed at University of CA, Irvine: Power Electronics Lab) that delivers a new paradigm: active conversion of 3-phase power without software. OCC’s hardware solution enables the robust, rapid, and stable dynamic response necessary for power dense, hybrid, load-following power systems. This Phase II proposal describes the vision for modular EPGBBs and the modification of the 15kVA OCC-PECC for integration with a prime-mover/generator “mule” for testing and demonstration.
