Research abstract
Highly accurate 3D geospatial data is increasingly available, but today’s commercial products do not incorporate the complex 3D data models and computational capabilities required to move beyond visualization and support the data analysis required by mission planners and warfighters. Without 3D data analysis capabilities, the Future Combat Systems (FCS) vision of fielding a “Future Force” this decade cannot be fully realized. In the Phase I Army SBIR project just completed, LSI leveraged its previous experience developing an ISO 19107 compliant 3D data model and demonstrated the feasibility of a 3D topology builder. All Phase I goals were met or exceeded, setting the stage for follow- on Phase II work to further research relevant technology and demonstrate an operational system that will enable Army personnel to build, validate, edit, query and display volumetric 3D topology and geometry on geospatial data from a variety of input sources. Implementation of these capabilities in a commercially available relational database management system will set a new standard for the industry and spur development of a range of client applications.
