Research abstract
The advanced structural watertight door system being developed by Juniper Industries, in conjunction with Walz & Krenzer, Inc., promises to help achieve the overall weight savings, improved performance, reduced maintenance time, and life cycle cost reductions that are currently being sought by new naval ship designs. Having demonstrated the economic and technical feasibility of the Juniper door system concept in Phase I, Phase II will yield fully functional prototypes that will prove out 1) the weight savings achieved, 2) the improved performance resulting from Juniper’s enhanced sealing, dogging, and hinging mechanisms, 3) the increased ease of use and installation, and 4) the increased ease and reduced frequency of maintenance that will drive down total cost of ownership. Furthermore, the Juniper door system is both a full form-fit-function replacement, as well as a go-forward solution that is wholly inline with the Navy’s goal to deploy a faster, lighter, and more efficient fleet. Future watertight door applications are also possible, for the military as well as commercially, due to the flexibility of material choice afforded by the Juniper door system.
