Research abstract

One of the problems with Li-ion technology is its somewhat limited ability to charge at high rates. At high charge rates lithium plating on the negative electrode can occur, which will hurt cycle life and could present safety risks. There is a need within the Army, Navy, other military services, NASA, and the commercial sector to improve the charge rate capability of Li-ion systems. The proposed effort will use an anode that is capable of intercalating lithium at high rates without plating lithium. In order to compensate for the lower energy of this anode, a high voltage cathode and an accompanying electrolyte will also be developed.
