Research abstract

Incompatibility is a major problem in wireless communications, due to the proliferation of wireless networks based on different technologies that cannot interoperate with one another. The incompatibility of consumer, military, and local jurisdictional communication devices was never more evident to the public than during the crisis of 9/11. The problem calls for communications devices that are highly versatile by design, enabled by processing resources that permit rapid adaptation by simple reprogramming of a standard hardware platform. To achieve this solution within the Department of Defense (DoD), the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) program is developing families of revolutionary software-programmable tactical radios that will provide the warfighter with voice, data and video communications, as well as interoperability across the joint battlespace with sufficient bandwidth to meet present and future communications challenges. The Joint Program Executive Office (JPEO JTRS) and Handheld Manpack Small Form-Factor program (PM HMS JTRS) have recognized the potentially great importance of Coherent Logix’s HyperX Technology and its associated software development tools to replace the DSP and FPGA devices in software-defined radio (SDR) baseband processors. HyperX hardware yields order of magnitude improvement in power savings, and the benefits of SDR versatility obviously extend to commercial civilian applications.
