Research abstract

This proposal is for the development and demonstration of an efficient wireless power transfer array module for transmitting solar power from a space based photovoltaic array in space to earth. Motivated by a novel method of generating and controlling an array of radio frequency signals from the solar panel DC power source, large quantities of power can be transmitted in a high temperature, low thermal dissipation environment by maximizing power conversion efficiency. The solution presented offers the low size, weight, power and cost necessary for space applications while surpassing the power conversion efficiency requirement and being inherently scalable without sacrificing efficiency to much higher power levels which are of interest for solar power transfer applications.
