Research abstract
Wheel chocks are used by USAF facilities around the world in environmental conditions of all extremes. However, there has not yet been a single, non-wood chock design that has proven adequate in all of these applications. Furthermore, wheel chock performance varies from one aircraft to another depending on tire geometry and aircraft weight. As a result, some USAF facilities must acquire and maintain multiple classes of wheel chocks to protect the various aircraft in a variety of environmental conditions. This complicates logistics, adds cost to routine operations and may lead to use of a chock inappropriate to the environmental conditions. During Phase I, the existing USAF specification will be compared against weapons platforms in inventory and their tech orders. Spec improvements will be recommended that accurately reflect the aircraft and conditions within which the chock must serve. Furthermore, a test plan will be proposed to be conducted in Phase II to validate whether a Type II, non-wood chock meets and exceeds the performance of a Type I wood chock in the various specified Class conditions. A test stand for conducting those tests will also be conceptualized. Finally, a chock design that meets the recommended performance specification will be proposed.
