Research abstract

The Phase I investigation demonstrated the ability to dial the total energy output from a new class on nanoenergetic compositions by altering the shock strength of the initiating charge. The Phase I study laid the groundwork for developing a practical dial- a-yield (DAY) warhead that can deliver a variable total energy output using multiple initiating charges. The technology advance relies upon a unique class of nanoenergetic compositions developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory and further advanced during the Phase I program. These compositions have a high intrinsic energy density, e.g. 28 MJ/cc and release their energy by a very fast (> 2km/s) combustion wave. During the course of the Phase I program, we demonstrated that this class of nanoenergetic compositions outperformed conventional organic explosives in sustained pressure and impulse, i.e. enhanced blast effects. Furthermore, the Phase II program addresses the dual objectives of developing a DAY technology while assuring that the final product will meet the DoD requirements for insensitive munitions. The objective will be demonstrated with small-scale (10 to 30 g) explosive devices in year-one and will culminate with large-scale (1 to 2 kg), arena-tests in year-two. This prototype warhead will be developed in concert with personnel at AFRL/MN.
