Research abstract

Echo Technical proposes to develop an innovative Miniaturized Impulsive Discharge Acoustic Source (MIDAS) to support the conduct of multi-static Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) missions. The solution proposed is based on a capacitive discharge acoustic source that produces high amplitude impulsive acoustic signals in response to a coded interrogation signal. The MIDAS package incorporates a GPS receiver and low-bandwidth transceiver for transmission of its position and receipt of command signals. Development and demonstration of MIDAS supports the ASW program through: 1. Conceptual development of a high energy density impulsive acoustic source tailored for multi-static sonar in a miniature package size, 2. Significant leverage of a mature commercial technology base, and 3. Application of that technology base to a unique, innovative mission-specific product.
