Research abstract
Microstructure sensitive design for performance optimization (MSDPO) embodies a rigorous mathematical framework for systematic design of material microstructure optimized to meet design requirements. It is deeply rooted in the spectral representations of the invertible linkages between a material's microstructure, its effective macroscale properties, and its processing history. Computationally efficient methodologies to build microstructure hulls and property closures, and to explore regions that are readily accessible by available material processing routes, are at the core of the MSDPO framework. Microstructure hulls delineate the complete set of theoretically feasible microstructures, while the property closures describe the complete set of corresponding theoretically feasible combinations of anisotropic macroscale properties for the selected material system. It is proposed to build a comprehensive microstructure-property-processing database using the MSDPO methodology with three main components. The first component, a microstructure database builder, will focus on building, analyzing, and exploring statistically accurate microstructures. The second component, a microstructure-property database builder will focus on a spectral crystal plasticity framework for polycrystalline cubic and hexagonal metals, producing an atlas of closures involving uniform ductility, ultimate tensile strength, and yield strength. The third component, a process database builder, will focus on producing optimized paths to microstructures with desired macroscale properties.
