Research abstract

The false alarm issue being extensive and multifaceted, based on both varying environments and radar types, modes, and capabilities, TSC proposes to design (Phase I) and build (Phase II) a prototype of a radar simulation Testbed that will provide for the development of counter false alarm techniques across the entire spectrum of adverse clutter, jamming, and interference environments, and will incorporate a number of proven models and modeling capabilities that evolved at TSC in the past decade. The Testbed evolution will consist of development spirals, the first of which will address issues relevant to near term needs of emerging advanced Navy radars, such as those which are faced with the significant challenge to detect very low observable threats across a wide range of stressing clutter, jamming, and interference environments. Future spirals will allow for insertion of advanced radar concepts and/or technologies, especially in areas such as state-of-the-art array architectures and advanced signal processing. During Phase I, the feasibility of the Testbed concept was successfully demonstrated via the creation of an initial version of the Testbed capable of generating simulated clutter returns for site specific environments, the results of which were shown to coincide with vector shoreline data and terrain features.
