Research abstract

This Phase II program addresses the need for a software-based coating assessment model that will forecast non-chromate coating system degradation and corrosion damage under primary environmental stresses. Faraday’s project team will develop this forecasting model by combining data mining and data fusion tools with fundamental analysis of electrochemical and visual observations of coating degradation. This forecasting tool will enable a better understanding of the performance of non-chromate coating systems, incorporate the effect of appropriate environmental stresses on the coating system to predict the service life of the coating as a function of environment, and estimate the life of the coating in that environment prior to coating breakdown and ensuing corrosion. The forecasting model could also be used to down-select new coating formulations, by separating out the effects of each layer in the coating system, and providing guidance as to the best possible combinations of conversion coating, primer and topcoat to provide the functionality required for USAF applications. In Phase II, laboratory and field testing of coated panels will build a database of coating properties that will enable algorithm development. In a Phase III program, the software module will be incorporated into a user-friendly coatings assessment interface.
