Research abstract

Modern radars are increasingly expanding their instantaneous bandwidths to improve resolution for imaging and targeting. This proposal details an FPGA implementable, advanced wideband algorithm that truly models the entire frequency spectrum and linearly tracks statistical source covariance changes over frequency. This is achieved by using a technique called derivative based updating (DBU). The novel aspect of this algorithm is its application in the frequency domain to track jammer source variations in angle as a function of frequency. This algorithm is compared with a traditional subband ECCM technique for multiple jamming scenarios. While the algorithm may be applied regardless of the front-end hardware design, front-end array hardware recommendations are recommended in this proposal. Finally, a brief section on stretch processing is presented. Stretch processing allows a wideband radar with an LFM waveform to actually sample slower than the Nyquist frequency at the expense of range swath.
