Research abstract

Current military vehicles mainly use Rolled Homogeneous Armor (RHA) steel to defeat firing arms from enemies. It is very heavy and significantly slow down the mobility of military vehicles. Vehicles manufacturers have explored the use of ceramic plates to protect military vehicles as they have the advantages of lightweight and excellent ballistic resistant properties. However, installation of these ceramic plates and ballistic fabrics have been an issue for armoring of military vehicles either in factory or in-field environment. After the firearms’ attack the broken structures need repair in field. In this SBIR project we propose to develop a rapid cured foaming resin that can be used to process and install various kinds of armor plates or repair damaged structure of military vehicles in field. The proposed composite system has strong adhesion to metals, ceramics, and aramid fabrics. It can also be applied to structures with complex contours and will be transparent to RF signal. It also features low cost and can be scaled up for large volume implementation in the near future. The proposed portable system is versatile for many military and commercial emergency applications in field or without the access of major equipment.
