Research abstract

The objective of this Phase II effort is to develop conformal, efficient wideband antennas that have minimal radiation pattern ripple for small diameter bombs (SDBs), in particular for the SDB Increment II (SDB-II) program. We are proposing to leverage the new antenna technologies that we investigated and demonstrated in Phase I of this program to create the new radiators that will be form-fit to the SDB-II munition. The antennas will be based on a wideband printed radiator we invented and material optimization that enables the antenna to be integrated within the SDB airframe. During Phase II of this project we will work closely with the Air Force and the SDB-II prime contractors to establish the primary electromagnetic (EM) and environmental requirements and ensure a suitable area on the SDB is used to locate the radiator. We will conduct thorough electromagnetic modeling and testing of the performance of the new antennas and subsequently develop environmentally compliant prototypes that can withstand the conditions associated with the environmental requirements. These prototypes will undergo rigorous EM and environmental testing (including vibration and temperature cycling). At the completion of Phase II we will deliver a flight test ready wideband conformal prototype SDB antenna assembly.
