Research abstract

A compact heavy fueled engine is progressing from a desire to a requirement. While scaling of engines has lead to gasoline fueled engines as a compromise, the development of heavy fueled hardware is still unfulfilled. A small scale Meyer Nutating Disk Engine provides the means of propulsion that the military has been seeking. The Nutating Engine will be sized to meet the requirements of the solicitation. This is a dual disk engine designed to produce a maximum output of 6.4 Hp at 4,000 rpm. The compact size, inherent to the nutating design, packages this engine within a 5” diameter and 7” overall length, weighing 8.0 pounds with a power density of 0.8 Hp/lb. Heavy fueled operation allows this engine to operate efficiently at reduced rpm and light loads extending mission length for loitering conditions. Engine operation is permissible at elevations up to 15,000 feet at reduced output levels. Initial development work has been accomplished on the Meyer Nutating Disk Engine, including a proof-of-principal prototype engine. Additional research is required to scale the model to fit current requirements and to advance the technology to a point where it will become a viable option for multiple potential military and commercial applications.
