Research abstract

Our Phase I program trades and subscale hot fire ignition testing have shown that operating time of a controllable solid propulsion system can increase to > 180 sec. Our innovative propellant extinguishment and re-ignition system, we call X-4 technology, provides this energy management flexibility and operating time extension. Our Phase II program continues the development with Ignition/Extinguishment hot fire testing to fully characterize propellant ignition and technical limitations. The program features hot fire testing of a prototype X-4 enabled propulsion system that duplicates all the performance and ballistics operation of a flight ready system with the added flexibility of test reusability and engineering data instrumentation. In addition the program concludes with a hot fire test of a flight weight X-4 valve. Successful completion of the Phase II program effectively matures the X-4 technology that makes it feasible for product application during follow-on Phase III programs.
