Research abstract

In the Phase I technical effort, Triton Systems Inc. (Triton) successfully demonstrated a novel ceramic matrix composite (CMC) preforming approach as a potential solution to current practical limitations in available fiber tow sizes and weave constructions. These coarse textile constructions inhibit effective reinforcement of tight corner and bend radii prevalent in gas turbine hot section components. The Dispersed Filament Preforming technology successfully demonstrated the production of a composite having all the dimensional and geometric features required of a generic stator vane configuration. Additionally, improvements on average of 50% beyond 2D laminate interlaminar properties were realized with the initial materials produced. In the Phase II effort, Triton will continue to evolve the Dispersed Filament Preforming techniques by producing a complex shape component with integral cooling channels of a design to be determined. Tooling improvements being developed in the Phase I Option will be incorporated. More extensive testing will be conducted to include elevated as well as room temperature properties. Finally, a review of the manufacturing process advantages and limitations will be conducted and cost projections made on a generic complex figure 8 component defined by NAVAIR.
