Research abstract

The purpose of this project is to determine the feasibility of utilizing metal matrix composite (MMC) prepreg tape material, either by itself or in combination with other materials, as a means of selectively reinforcing aluminum structures that comprise the superstructure of Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs). The primary goal of this effort will be to reduce the complexity, cost, and weight of the Joint Maritime Assault Connector (JMAC), the next-generation ACV, beyond the current Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC) vehicles. Specific problems to be addressed include the structural efficiency (weight), durability and damage tolerance, corrosion, and reparability of the current design. Feasibility will be determined through design and structural analyses and coupon-level testing during Phase I.
