Research abstract

We propose to develop an innovative, traveling-wave tube amplifier (TWTA) compatible with three-dimensional (3D) micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) fabrication techniques for submillimeter-wave applications. The development will focus on a novel, interaction circuit; long life, high current density electron guns; compact power supplies; and compact magnet configurations providing compact, lightweight, and affordable devices. The batch nature of MEMS fabrication provides repeatability of components for increased yields and reliability, and reduced cost. The Phase II effort will use advanced, state-of-the-art simulation tools to finalize the design of a 650 GHz traveling wave tube amplifier providing approximately 300-500 mW of power. We will thoroughly investigate the interaction circuit for its thermal and electrical performance, including bandwidth and efficiency. In addition, major TWTA components will be designed, including input/output couplers, vacuum windows, power supply, electron gun, focusing structure, and collector. The program will focus on MEMS fabrication techniques and integration of several TWT components into the fabrication procedure to avoid assembly and alignment procedures, which become increasingly difficult at higher frequencies. After completion of the mechanical design, we will fabricate, assemble and test a 650 GHz miniaturized TWTA with the goal of fabricating the entire system by MEMS techniques for "TWT on a chip" technology.
