Research abstract

To address Navy need for efficient, high-resolution simulators providing 20/20 clarity foveal display, Luminit, LLC proposes to develop a new Gaze-contingent Immersive Field-of-view head mounted Display (GIFD). This proposed device is based on our low profile holographic substrate-guided HMD and eye tracker integrated with a miniature CMOS camera and flat panel microdisplay. A multi-resolution display technique will be applied to vary the resolution based on the eye’s gaze. GIFD will take advantage of human eye performance by tracking the pilot’s gaze and providing a small eye-tracked FOV with high resolution while also providing a much lower resolution immersive peripheral FOV. It will offer real-time simulation of arbitrary visual fields with the implementation of a commercial graphics card. The net result is a lightweight, easy to maintain imaging system with 20/20 resolution, which projects real time virtual environments an order of magnitude more complex than current systems and complies with the requirements of the Joint Strike Fighter program. In Phase I Luminit will conduct a proof-of-concept demonstration and define the risks and performance in a training simulation environment. In Phase II, Luminit plans to construct helmet-mountable, prototype system. An upgraded real-time device will be implemented in Phase III for Navy testing.
