Research abstract

We will determine how to effectively apply an organometallic external barrier coating to arc tubes to prevent or delay their failure by devitrification. The most important consideration is source life, followed by lumen maintenance, the spectral output and cost. The coating process will be the Microdyne system demonstrated in Phase I. The alternate processes of CLCB and dip-coating will be investigated. The spectral, barrier, and conductive features of a number of different compounds (mostly Si, Ta, and Ti based) will be explored in UV, IR, anti-reflective and tinted coatings. In addition to devitrification formation and temp life, the coatings interaction with arc tube construction, back-arc starting, and thermal affects will be tested and the science investigated. To accomplish all this, rapid and thorough life testing capabilities will be constructed.
