Research abstract

Kuchera Defense Systems (KDS) of Windber, PA has assembled a highly qualified Team to support the Phase II Innovative Corrosion Protection via Cold Spray Kinetic Metallization SBIR effort. This team consists of members from various organizations that bring together unique strengths and areas of expertise within the corrosion protection and cold spray technologies. Team members include: • KDS • Applied Research Laboratory / Pennsylvania State University (ARL/PSU) o Including – PennState Materials Research Institute (MRI) • Bucknell University • Lockheed Martin Advanced Development Programs (LM ADP) • Utilizing the results of the Phase I and related programs related to Cold Spray technology, the team has developed a program that will improve and qualify the Cold Spray process for applying coatings on 2xxx and 7xxx aluminum alloys that have been optimized for corrosion protection, mechanical property debit, and cost. The ability to coat complex parts is also being optimized and will allow for new arenas in Cold Spray corrosion resistance coatings. The primary goal of the Phase II effort is the development of corrosion resistant coatings for 2xxx and 7xxxx alloys that exceed the capabilities of the current corrosion protection schemes. An emphasis will be on coating of Al-2024 and Al-7075 alloys.
