Research abstract

The severity and spectrum of battlefield injuries seen in military conflict is rarely encountered in the civilian sector. It is exceedingly difficult to achieve adequate training for these complex battlefield injuries (e.g., blast injuries) in the civilian sector. There exists a need for a situation-specific training tool for physicians deploying to combat zones. We propose a low-cost, widely deployable, scalable multimodal training solution. A personal computer (PC)-based, multimodal training system to promote skill acquisition and maintenance in life saving resuscitative, procedural, and operative management of battlefield injuries would provide deploying careproviders a relevant, vivid, and concise training tool. This Combat Injury Training System would comprise digital video footage of actual complex battlefield injury care, three-dimensional (3D) interactive image visualization of patient anatomy, digital media and interactive game elements, motion sensor, and force-feedback technologies. This multimodal trainer will provide a level of instruction not possible using traditional and mannequin-based teaching methods. It will also provide users with an independent learning tool providing real-time feedback and performance tracking. The structure of the educational platform will meet SCORM compliance standards and be compatible with future ADL systems.
