Research abstract

The use of polymer matrix composites in selected parts of the future aircraft turbine engines offers significant benefits for aircraft engine performance. However, their useful life time (durability) is limited by their poor erosion resistance. In Phase I, UES demonstrated the feasibility of a physical vapor deposition technique to develop highly adherent and erosion resistant coatings on the selected polymer matrix composite. The objective of the SBIR Phase II project is to continue refinement and testing of highly ranked coatings to obtain optimal erosion resistance under the required conditions. Also in Phase II, the erosion resistance performance of the optimized coatings will be validated on actual engine components. This will be done in co-operation and/or participation of turbine engine manufacturers.
