Research abstract

In lithium ion systems, in particular, addressing the question of robustness with respect to specifically overcharge and overdischarge are of great importance because of the underlying safety and integrity issues involved. MaxPower explored this issue in the Phase I project. In this Phase II project we are proposing to take the LiC6/Li1.11Ni0.37Co0.18Mn0.37O2 technology to the next level by testing it for long-term deep-discharge applications as well as periodic and destructive abuse. The overall system will be developed to a light-weight, hermetically sealed 20 Ah product-level design. The specific energy of the system is presently projected to be 130 Wh/kg. This development will be executed taking various aerospace applications into account. The end result of this Phase II is expected to be a safer, more robust product-oriented system with a similar energy density to the current state-of-the-art.
