Research abstract

To address the U.S. Air Force need to repair scratches in ITO-coatings on aircraft canopies and lamp housings, Physical Optics Corporation (POC) proposes to develop a new Laser-Assisted Coating Repair (LACR) system. LACR is based on the laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) of coating thin films without the need for a controlled environment. The novel use of interchangeable focusing adaptive lenses and the new transparent layered repair patch (LaRP) enables the LACR system with its handheld Nd:YAG laser to quickly repair scratches to ITO coatings of a variety of shapes and sizes without the removal of the damaged assembly. In Phase I POC will demonstrate the feasibility of LACR by repairing polycarbonate coupons with scratched ITO coatings, restoring their optical and electrical properties. In Phase II we plan to develop a self-contained laser assembly for direct mounting of the LaRP repair patch for quick repair of any damaged ITO coating.
