Research abstract

A high-throughput (100 kHz), high-resolution (16-bit) 24-channel data acquisition system for strain gages is to be developed, specifically for turbine engine testing. The performance of large sensor data acquisition systems is greatly enhanced by employing networked smart sensors based on open standards. In particular, the IEEE 1451 smart transducer standards provide self-identification and “plug and play” features based on the TEDS (Transducer Electronic Data Sheet) as well as an unambiguous data transfer format which much reduces the chances of sensor data communication error. A TEDS will be used for the identification and calibration. Data will be formatted using the IEEE 1451 standard and be transmitted on a fiber Ethernet (1000 Mb/s) to a host computer for storage, analysis and display. Data acquisition will be accurately time-stamped using IEEE 1588 procedures.
