Research abstract

We believe that the future of human body testing in military and civilian applications is in using a new generation of “dummies” – “virtual humans”. This project will develop an integrated 3D Java framework for a user interactive Virtual Body framework, which can serve as a Virtual Body for anthropometry/anatomy based generation of human body models for biomechanics, physiology, and injury simulators. In Phase I we developed a software framework for visual manipulation and processing of human body anthropometric, skeletal, vascular and other databases. We also demonstrated the framework for scan/anatomy based virtual human body model generation and predictive simulation of cardiovascular system responses to high-g aircraft maneuvers. The fully developed Virtual Body developed in Phase II will allow for complete user control and editing of morphing capabilities including: skeletal, muscular, vascular, skin, and other anatomical systems. It will provide the capability to generate/edit the static/dynamic human body models from laser scans, anthropometric databases, even pictures for predictive modeling of human body performance. The Virtual Body will also act as a data-generator/preprocessor for available human body simulation software biomechanics, ergonomics, cardiopulmonary physiology, blast injury and other simulators. It will be demonstrated on modeling pilot biomechanical and physiological responses to test and combat stresses.
