Research abstract

The Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) engine will be capable of performing on-board fault detection, isolation, and prognosis. The engine will include a variety of advanced sensor components and processing strategies expressly tailored for prognostics and health monitoring (PHM) that have not been implemented before on any engine. IAC, with Pratt & Whitney support, proposes to develop a dynamic hybrid turbine engine model for maintenance decision support. The hybrid approach fuses a physical model with an empirical model to provide enhanced diagnostics and prognostics capabilities for gas turbine engines. Fusion of techniques has been shown to improve detection and classification performance while simultaneously reducing false alarms. The physics model used is STORM (Self Tuning On-board, Real-time engine Model). Addition of an empirical modeling component results in an enhanced STORM or eSTORM. On Phase II we plan to further develop the F135 eSTORM concept. The model will be implemented in real-time using an IAC-1134 system that will be ready for installation in a test cell environment. If available, the real-time system will be demonstrated processing F135 data in a test stand environment.
