Research abstract

Modern flight and maintenance training simulators are exceedingly complex devices. In addition to the complexity derived from the design basis device, there is additional complexity added to support the simulator training mission. As a result, ensuring that these complex systems are performing properly has become a major task. The effort associated with validating a simulator can take many months of testing and re-testing. In addition, this effort must be performed repeatedly as the trainer is updated and maintained as part of the simulator life cycle. The goal of this research effort is to design a system that will provide a consistent approach to the testing effort that will address the typical limitations currently being experienced. Automation for certain aspects of the process that are tedious will reduce errors. Visibility to all aspects of the testing process will be a critical design requirement along with a graphic user interface (GUI) to provide ease of use. These advances will streamline the process, enhancing the testing quality while reducing the overall schedule duration. With the importance of testing in the typical simulator life cycle, this will greatly enhance training effectiveness while reducing cost.
