Research abstract

Infoscitex is developing a Multifunctional Programmable Structure (MPS) enabling modular satellite assembly and payload integration. MPS achieves a revolutionary plug-and-play thermal management capability allowing satellite payloads to be assembled onto a modular satellite bus implementing out-of-the-box thermal management. MPS is designed to handle an extremely wide range of satellite payloads, orbits and missions, based around the core set of missions critical to the DOD’s Responsive Space initiative. MPS design also implements the electronic and structural connections required by a fully modular spacecraft bus. Phase 1 demonstrated the feasibility of MPS’ innovative modular thermal management, and investigated a range of design approaches for the modular structure. Phase 2 will fully prove out the thermal performance of the system and push development towards encompassing as wide a range of thermal scenarios as possible. Phase 2 will also develop modular structural and electronic interfaces, culminating in a fully featured demonstration (modular thermal, structural and electronic interfaces) on AFRL’s Responsive Space Testbed. Infoscitex is working with team partner Lockheed-Martin Space Systems Company to guide design requirements, support prototype testing, and achieve successful Phase 3 commercialization.
