Research abstract
Small arms ammunition has not changed significantly in decades. Projectiles consisting of lead cores, jacketed with copper alloy have been in service since the early twentieth century and continue to be widely used. Lead is highly toxic, and concerns have been raised regarding the environmental impact of lead core small arms projectiles. Liberty Ammunition Inc. was founded to explore alternative green designs for small arms projectiles, which provide improved performance. Several approaches have been considered, the most recent of which appears to provide significant benefit. Liberty's technology represents a unique approach to small arms projectile design and construction. The materials and techniques used to produce Liberty projectiles allow for great design flexibility. Critical performance parameters such as penetration, fragmentation, muzzle energy and accuracy can be individually tailored for specific requirements. Standard cartridge cases with COTS primers and propellants have been successfully loaded with Liberty projectiles. This technology is not caliber specific, preliminary data indicates that Liberty projectiles can be used in a wide variety of existing small arms.
