Research abstract

The overall objective of this project is to develop a sensor that can measure dust size and concentration exposure for military engine inlets. In order to achieve the simplest possible real-time sensor package, we have focused on a single-ended sensor design that measures back-scattered light to determine dust conditions. These measurements of dust concentrations and size can then be correlated with engine wear. The end goal of phase II is to develop and deliver three working prototype sensors that have been tested and verified on ground-based gas turbine engines.
