Research abstract

A prototype Rapid Mission Planning and Operations software tool is being developed in the Phase I ef-fort. It is proposed here to continue this effort, greatly maturing the software tool and establishing its benefits in a real-world, high-fidelity mission planning demonstration. We refer to this software tool as the Mission Planner. It will take advantage of technologies developed under the Air Force’s Integrated Adaptive Guidance and Control Program to quickly generate mission plans for launch vehicles. At the end of the Phase II program, the Mission Planner will be able to perform automatically many of the tasks currently performed manually requiring numerous engineers and their time and effort. This tool will be able to map out trajectories, generate achievable footprints, perform trade studies, and determine per-formance requirements and necessary vehicle characteristics to complete the mission. Our goal will be to develop a product that executes fast and has many autonomous features, allowing for substantially re-duced mission planning time and personnel needed. The maturation of the Mission Planner will involve a high fidelity model of Lockheed’s Hybrid Launch Vehicle concept. Lockheed will also build a launch vehicle simulation model that resembles the Air Force’s Fully Reusable Access to Space (FAST) concept.
