Research abstract

This Phase II project will develop nanomaterial sorbents for desulfurization of logistics fuels. The project’s purpose is to allow ultra-low emissions engines to use JP-8 and diesel fuels, which are traditionally high in sulfur, by reducing their sulfur content below 15 ppm, an acceptable level compatible with the new engine designs. Success in this project will provide the military with a viable solution to using available fuel and complying with emission standards. nGimat and Georgia Institute of Technology will use nanomaterials produced by the Nanospray Combustion process to meet the aforementioned needs. This technology provides advantages over other techniques by making high surface area supported nanocomposites with excellent adhesion between dissimilar materials and much less susceptibility to elevated temperature sintering since the production method is flame-based. We will fine tune nanomaterial compositions to maximize reversible chemisorption to different organosulfur species. In Phase I, nGimat demonstrated JP-8 sulfur removal as part of a steam-reforming process. In Phase II, we will show superior throughput, capacity, purity, regenerability, and durability performance. nGimat will build, evaluate, test, and send a prototype unit to the Air Force for testing. The Georgia Centers for Innovation/OneGeorgia will provide a partial cost share for the proposed work.
