Research abstract

This Phase II NAVAIR SBIR Program seeks to demonstrate the Reactive Transformation Process (RTP) as an alternative innovative new class of interfacial coating method (to the conventional CVI) for 2-D woven, 3-D woven, and/or non-woven muti-dimensional ceramic fiber pre-forms in JSF turbine engine CMC component applications. These CMC components include combustion liners, turbine airfoils, turbine shrouds, and exhaust nozzles of flaps and seals. MG-developed and optimized RTP coatings are to be further demonstrated in Phase II in the following areas: o Pre-form size and thickness; large and thick-section o Any Si-based ceramic fiber types; Si-(O)-C, Si-(O)-N-C o Amorphous or crystalline Si-based fibers; CG-Nicalon vs. Sylramic o Non-stoichiometric or near-stoichiometric Si-C fibers; CG-Nicalon vs. Sylramic o Any ceramic matrix densification; CVI, PIP, and/or MI MG’s RTP is an in-situ formed, nearly 100% retention of as-received ceramic fiber strength, uniform, non-fiber-to-fiber bonding, and reproducible interfacial coating process, clearly compared to the current “state-of-the-art” chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) coating process.
