Research abstract

A engineering software product is proposed with unprecedented capabilities for rigorously predicting electromagnetic coupling to networks of multi-conductor transmission lines and nonlinear circuits located in realistic enclosures (e.g., circuit board cabinets, buildings, vehicles). Simultaneous time-domain solution of electromagnetic phenomena at three different scales (i.e., exterior - large, cables - medium, and circuits - small) is achieved through careful integration/interfacing of multiple computational methods. These methods incorporate recent developments in fast algorithms to render the solution of “real world” problems tractable. A sophisticated graphical user interface (GUI) for scenario configuration, job execution, and result display is described. The GUI is a critical part of the proposed tool given the scenario complexity supported by the simulation models. Configuring realistic HPM/UWB problems involving multiple scales of geometry and components is non-trivial. The GUI design renders problem set-up intuitive through emphasis on 3-D and 2-D visualization of radiation sources, enclosure geometry, cable networks, and circuits. Our team consists of members from industry and academia with extensive experience in electromagnetic compatibility, computational electromagnetics, circuit modeling, and engineering tool software development.
