Research abstract

Migma Systems, Inc. and Professor Cynthia Bir of Wayne State University propose an innovative technology to quickly and accurately predict the probability and severity of potential injuries caused by vehicle crashes, blasts, aircraft ejections and other impact events as appropriate for users employing personnel in military vehicles. The proposed approach integrates two classes of predictive tools, the kinematic models predicting the mechanical human body response to the impact and the criteria of probability and severity of the injures or Human Injury Tolerance (HIT) criteria. In Phase I, we consider head-, spinal and thoracic injuries, as these are the most frequent injuries in the military crashes and impacts. The impact conditions will be the automotive crash, blast and aircraft ejection. To validate the accuracy of this approach, the selected mechanistic models will be tested against the Air Force Biodynamics Database. The injury criteria will be selected manually in Phase I, and will be automatically selected based on their domain of validity in Phase II. The integrated model will be verified using the available crash data of NHTSA.
