Research abstract

To address the U.S. Air Force need for a device to evaluate the performance of wearable laser eye protection (LEP) devices, Physical Optics Corporation (POC) proposes to continue developing the Dual Optical Ultrawideband Laser Eyeware Transmission (DOUBLET) evaluation device that was demonstrated feasible in Phase I. POC’s DOUBLET evaluation device is based on an efficient signal processing procedure that extends the dynamic range of optical density measurements to OD greater than or equal to 5 with a photodetection dynamic range of 20-30 dB. The miniature versatile bulk-optics-based design performs simultaneous visible and infrared detection without moving parts over a wide wavelength and temperature range. In Phase I we successfully demonstrated the capability of measuring the spectral transmission characteristics of LEP goggles over the wavelength range from 400 to 1000 nm with optical density (OD) from 0 to 5. Our Phase II efforts will focus on optimizing the DOUBLET design, fabricating and testing a prototype capable of measuring the OD spectrum of LEP devices over the spectral range from 400-1400 nm and the OD range (0-5) with high accuracy within +/-10%. We will take into account of ease-of-use, portability, ruggedness, and database protection in Phase II prototype design and development.
