Research abstract

Current biosurveillance systems monitor limited data sources or utilize rigid rules that limit their effectiveness and flexibility causing problems such as triggering alarms so frequent that they are routinely ignored. Biosurveillance systems today can be improved by utilizing intelligent software agent networks with flexible templates refined by experts and software in collaboration. In this Phase I Infoscitex program, Infoscitex proposes to develop this architecture and as a result have the ability to proactively identify bioevents by fusing disparate data sources providing commanders the information they need in time to accurately assess the danger and make a difference. The Phase I program will evaluate the proper design of a software system architecture that will accomplish these goals and allow the refinement necessary to learn from past events to minimize current problems such as false alarms. While a system of this caliber is invaluable to theatre commanders needing to protect their troops, we believe that further development will lead to a wide range of biosurveillance detection and resolution systems protecting civilians and troops alike from natural and terrorist bioevents. Such as system would be attractive to the military, hospitals, municipalities, and managed healthcare providers.
