Research abstract

Crowd management is an important task for civilian, police, and military groups that can be very difficult on its own, and becomes even more difficult in hostile environments. The difficulty comes from the many levels of granularity that events can happen at. Making such a system automated adds further challenges, due to difficulties with modeling and sensors. Accurate large-scale crowd models are extremely difficult to create, because of all the possible ways they can change. Sensors for the purpose of watching a crowd are often unable gather all the necessary information to allow an automated system to accurately model a crowd. 21st Century Systems, Incorporated, along with our partners at the University of Hawai`i, are pleased to propose our Culture and Modeling of Routine and Non-Routine Behavior (CMR-NRB) system. We plan on using advanced sensors of multiple types, including audio and visual, to feed our in-depth model of crowds and individuals. From the modeling side, the concept is to adapt the concepts of general cultural models to build a decision-support system distinguishing between routine and non-routine behavior, specific to the population being analyzed, and in particular to identify patterns of behavior that might match a profile for hostile intent.
